20th US President. A self-taught man, Garfield became a professor of dead languages and fought in the Civil War. Head of the republican party and a representative of Ohio, Garfield was elected president in 1880. He was assassinated in 1881 by Charles Guiteau. The portion of his spine through which the fatal bullet passed is on permanent storage at the National Museum of Health and Medicine.
