War Service:   September 1861 Lt. Col. and aide to McClellan, July 1862 chief quartermaster of the Army of the Potomac, May 1863 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, chief quartermaster of all armies around Richmond.

Post War Career:   Army service, quartermaster general, retired 1883.

Ingalls graduated from West Point in the Class of 1843. He served from Monterey, California, to Washington, D. C. At the beginningof the Civil War, he was appointed chief quartermaster of the army and served all the major generals throughout the war. He was appointed brigadier general of Volunteers, May 23, 1863 and won brevets through those of major general rank in both the regular and volunteer services.

At Gettysburg, Rufus Ingalls was brigadier general, chief quartermaster. He served throughout the war at South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. He established and supervised the Army Depot at City Point, Virginia.

After the Civil War he was employed for sixteen years as chief quartermaster of the Pacific and the Missouri Division. He retired in 1883.

He died in New York City and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
