| April, 1845. Grant obtained leave for twenty days. He traveled to St. Louis to see Julia, and to gain her parents' consent to an engagement which had been a secret for almost a year. Colonel Dent doubted that Grant could support a family on a lieutenant's pay, but he liked Grant and could not deny his daughter's obvious determination. |
